Sure, it doesn’t have Gears of War or Halo (like it or not, you can’t deny their greatness), but who needs intense shooters when you have platforming goodness in the form of Little Big Planet, and the Tomb Raider toppling Uncharted series? No one! So feast your eyes on All Age Gaming’s Top 10 list for the best games the Playstation 3 has to offer so far.
10. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
One of Playstation’s top series makes its next-gen debut in Guns of the Patriots; the most visually stunning and overall awesome installation to the long running series. Jump into the boots of Old Snake, as he fights his way through a war torn world attempting to take down the infamous Liquid Sun, and the many challenges he faces along the way. The game is a technically flawless blend of stealth and action, along with solid drama and amazing set pieces and cinematics. The game doesn’t really do anything new in terms of gameplay and innovation, but rather perfects what we all know and love about not just the series, but gaming itself. Top stuff and something everyone can enjoy.
9. Street Fighter IV
Arguably the best fighting game. Ever. Street Fighter IV is the finest fighter on a console right now, and makes the transition from arcade to home console perfectly, keeping all its enjoyment and addictive multiplayer in-tact. With a wide array of characters and a great display of visually appealing combos and special moves, there isn’t anything about SSIV not to like. Plus we all secretly love beating people up so this lets us vent that craving.
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The newest, and somewhat most impressive game in the long running Call of Duty series; Modern Warfare 2 is an amazingly fun and action-packed shooter with plenty of content and plenty of replayablilty. It’s the most dramatic and story driven in the series, and features one of the most popular and critically successful multiplayer experience on a console. With a great single player campaign, varied co-op experience and the aforementioned multiplayer goodness, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is so far, this generations most definitive shooting experience. A generic shooter has never been so good.
7. Demon’s Souls
To break the ice; know that this is only for the true RPG fans, and even then, this is not one to be taken lightly. Demon’s Souls is an extremely difficult and dark RPG that would have most players throwing their controllers on the floor in fits of rage. But get good enough to conquer some of the more challenging enemies, and you have yourself one of the most detailed and best RPGs seen in recent years. Demon’s Souls has a very dark setting which would put off and bring in a lot of different people respectfully. It also has some very unique online capabilities like the message leaving concept from player to player to give hints and what-not to others who are having a hard time at certain parts, as well as a great co-op experience. Seriously one for every hardcore RPG lover, Demons Souls is dark, disturbing and above all else; stunning.
6. GTA IV
There is little that needs to be said about this game. GTA IV is the newest, most complete installation into the series and brings to life a massive city full of potential for you to play how you want, when you want. Steal every car, buy every gun, run over every pedestrian, and shoot every cop. The only thing that you need to know to play GTA IV is that the world is yours; you just need to take it. There are countless hours of fun in the campaign, along with the unlimited amount of fun you can have by aimlessly exploring and driving around like a madman, but also the game has utilized a serious multiplayer mode for the first time in the series. Everything from co-op and racing, to cops & robbers and deathmatch; there is something for any mood that strikes. Even today, GTA IV is a fun experience that is worth picking up if you don’t already have yourself a copy and a standout game in an age of countless entries into the genre.
5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 2 takes the best bits from all your beloved 3D platformers like Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia, and adds in a hefty dosage of memorable adventures and over-the-top action. Each level has some major set pieces that will have your jaw dropping like nothing before, and each and every battle is an adrenaline filled masterpiece worthy of a Hollywood movie (one of which is actually in the works for this baby). So gears up, and take on an army in one of the finest games on the PS3, and when you’re up for a real challenge, take the fight to the online community for some intense action and multiplayer extremity.
4. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Arkham Asylum was good enough to grab All Age Gaming’s Game of the Year awards last year, so that just goes to show it really is something special. Regarded as the best super hero game of all time, and even the best licensed game, Batman: Arkham Asylum takes you to a place where no game was taken you before; the depths of the unholy Batman universe. Take on Joker, Poison Ivy, Bane and more from Batman’s vigilant past as you explore Arkham Island to its fullest in order to solve the mysteries it holds and put a stop to the madness within. A large, believable gaming world rich in detail and graphical perfection, topped with an all-star cast and an impressive array of gadgets that go hand in hand with Batman’s deep combat system to make it a truly great experience. Arkham Asylums unique blend of stealth and action will have you on your knees in awe and loving this game from very first scene to the climatic ending.
3. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Every hardcore gamer loves a good RPG, and this day and age, we’re seeing less and less standout ones. So it’s great when we have at least one particular RPG that we can play and over from start to finish and still love it to bits. And that’s just what the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion allows us to do. Oblivion is one of the most immersing games on the market, and features one of the largest living, breathing worlds you will ever fight through. Staying true to the fantasy backdrop, Oblivion allows players to mold their character however they see fit; from the heroic warrior, to the spell casting mage, and even a conniving thief. Another notable with the game is its many different factions and guilds, most of which you can join and rise in ranks within. Sure, lots of games have factions, but none have as detailed a history and belief system as each and every unique and interact able character within each of these factions. Speaking of which, each and every character in Oblivion is their own person and have their own personalities and all. There really isn’t much more you could ask for in an RPG; because Oblivion delivers it all.
2. Little Big Planet
Little Big Planet is one of the best platforming games the world has ever known (that’s right, this is so good it gives Mario what for). This is the most addictive and downright enjoyable game on the current generation, and there is nothing that comes close to the good times you can have, and most definitely will have, from playing through the game with up to four player co-op. And when you get tired of playing through the games campaign, which is very enjoyable and has a decent length, you can take the challenge online, to play one of the thousands of home-made maps from the games extremely imaginative map editor. Playing these user created maps is the games main highlight too, as there are countless themed maps that parody all your favorite games and movies (and even rival consoles). The fun never ends with Little Big Planet, and when you can just pick and play within minutes, you won’t want it to ever end.
To top of our list of the 10 best Playstation games to date is Bioshock. Although not an immediate release on the PS3, the game was well worth the long wait, as was delivered with a little more polish and content than its PC and 360 counterparts. Enter the world of Rapture, as you struggle to survive in a ruined utopia full of mutants, shadows and secrets deeper and darker than you can imagine. The game seamlessly blends the best of many game genres; from survival horror, to RPG, all sewn together with top-quality first person action. Never has a game been so wonderful to play, and so brain-strikingly brilliant. One of the most addictive and replayable adventures of all time; Bioshock has earned its place atop out Top 10 PS3 Games list.
Still another wave of great PS3 exclusives to come in the following year, this list is going to see more competition than ever. Whether or not these games are going to utilize the PS3 new motion controller is yet to be seen, but one thing is for sure; 2010 is going to be huge.
