AAG’s Developer Profile #13: Obsidian Entertainment

8th November 2010 - In our 13th developer profile, we look at the Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment.

Developer Name: Obsidian Entertainment

Subsidiary Of: Independent

Founded: 2003

About: Obsidian Entertainment is an American game development studio brought to life through the ashes of the famed Black Isles Studio. Effectively known in the industry as the go-to guys for a revamped sequel, Obsidian have proved themselves time and time again to be masters of brining to life someone else’s game universe in new and exciting ways.

Fun Fact: Black Isles were the developers of the original Fallout games, and the cancelled Fallout 3: Van Buren project back in 2003, before they disbanded to create Obsidian.

Their first new IP was the promising Alpha Protocol [Craig, thought you could link my review here??], which unfortunately let down on said promises. With the future looking bright after the recent release of Fallout: New Vegas, these guys are back in business and I for one look forward to seeing if they continue with sequels and try to crack the market with another new IP.

Notable Feats:
The Sith Lords
Obsidians very first game was the sequel to BioWare’s RPG epic, Knights of the Old Republic. It took everything we loved about the first game and expanded upon this, making it the definitive Star Wars video game experience. As a hardcore Star Wars fan, I absolutely ate this one up.

Fun Fact: The team from Obsidian had already worked with BioWare before taking over KOTOR too, as they published BioWare’s popular Baldur’s Gate series

Neverwinter Nights 2
These guy developed the massively successful sequel to the original RPG Neverwinter Nights. They went on to successfully create a further 2 expansion packs for the game, all of which pleased series fans and expanded the great game to a new audience. It was this daring feat which got them the attention of the gaming world as we waited anxiously for their next project.
